16th Annual New York Jewish Film Festival
Courier, Dec. 28, 2006
On the documentary front, the festival includes two world premieres.
In Sonia, director Lucy Kostelanetz explores the life of her
aunt, Sofia (Sonia) Dymshitz-Tolstaya, a Russian avant-garde
painter and utopian visionary inspired by the promise of the
Russian Revolutions. Using interviews and archival footage, Kostelanetz
captures the spirit of a bohemian who continued to make personal
art under the oppressive Soviet regime.
